News Make food less weird with Veganuary 2025

Why Veg?

The annual 31-day pledge to try vegan is upon us with an important mission – to highlight how weird our current food system is.

UK not-for-profit Veganuary have never been backward in coming forward … and this coming campaign for January 2025 is certainly no exception.

Now in its 11th year, the 31-day pledge to try vegan for the month of January (and beyond) has a new message to spread – “food doesn’t have to be weird”. The campaign uses a little cheeky humour (and a slightly provocative angle) to point out some of the strange eating habits and practices we’ve somehow normalised over the years.

“Our new theme, ‘Food doesn’t have to be weird,’ challenges the everyday norms of society’s eating habits influenced by the traditional food industry, showing that what is widely considered ‘normal’ is actually quite strange.

Take drinking cow’s milk, for example: a beverage intended solely for calves, yet somehow a staple in humanity’s daily lives. Or consider the weird rituals we perform around holiday meals.”

I must say – they do have a point!

We tend to accept things as ‘normal’ simply because they’ve been passed down through generations or reinforced by industries with a vested interest. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that progress begins when a few compassionate humans ask, “Is this really the best, kindest way?” Whether it’s challenging outdated practices or rethinking what’s on our plates, change always starts with someone noticing that things are, frankly, a bit weird.

So consider joining Veganuary this year in questioning some of humanity’s weirdest habits and imagining a better way forward. You can register to take part in the challenge here, or take the pledge as a team in the workplace. Check out this handy Workplace Challenge Guide for all the info you need. In the meantime, be sure to follow their Facebook and Instagram to see what weird things they’re talking about.

And as always, for any help or advice, just reach out to your trusty pals here at VegKit! We’re kinda pros at this whole vegan thing 😉
