Find familiarity
‘When I first went vegetarian, I found myself wanting “meaty” meals. But I quickly realised it wasn’t meat I was craving. It was the end result: a well-seasoned, sometimes salty, protein-rich meal that was filling and familiar. It didn’t take me long to discover that all those elements can be found in plant-based meals that taste just as good – if not better. I now stay satisfied with savoury, filling foods like sautéed mushrooms, crispy vegetarian meats or a snack of salty mixed nuts.’
Fuel your body
‘Because plant-based foods have fewer calories and less fat than animal products, when I ditched meat I found I needed to increase the amount of food I was eating, especially as I lead an active life. I recommend including a variety of foods – plenty of veggies, fruit, grains and seeds and a variety of good fats, which we all need to be healthy. For me, this was a blessing in disguise. Now I can enjoy more of the foods I love, while maintaining a healthy weight and feeling full of energy.’
Discover delicious plant-based products
‘I was an avid meat and dairy eater back in the day. I loved a chicken curry, sausage with mash or a toasted cheese sandwich, which is why I was thrilled to discover a smorgasbord of plant-based products that fulfilled these cravings without the cruelty or saturated fats. From crispy schnitzels and ground ‘mince’, to creamy dairy-free milk and smooth ice cream, the number of plant-based products has grown massively in recent years, and most supermarkets stock them. My biggest tip is to try a variety and see which one you like best.’
