Apple sauce is one of those things you simply buy in a jar from the shops — until the first time you make it at home, and realise how effortless it is! Not to mention, tastier than anything at a supermarket.

You will need

Makes 1

  • 3 apples, 2 grated and 1 chopped roughly (russet apples if possible)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 100ml water
  • 50g sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/2 grapefruit, zest and juice

To serve:

  • 1 cup granola (nut-free and gluten-free if needed)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut yoghurt
  • Splash of oat milk (or plant-based milk of your choice)
  • 1 apple, thinly sliced

  1. Step 1

    Place all the apple sauce ingredients in a pan on medium heat for 5–10 minutes until apples are softly broken down.

  2. Step 2

    Add the zest and juice of the grapefruit to the apple puree, stir to mix through, and remove from heat.

  3. Step 3

    Place the granola, yoghurt and milk in a bowl and top with a big scoop of warm applesauce. Finish with some freshly sliced apple. Place extra apple sauce in a jar sterilised jar and store in the fridge for when needed.
