Directions

15 mins to prep

2 hours to set

30 mins to bake

  1. Step 1

Add all the ingredients to a large bowl and mix until it comes together. On a floured surface, knead the dough for 5 minutes or until it becomes smooth and stretchy. If the dough is too dry or sticky, add a little more milk or flour and knead until it comes together.

  2. Step 2

Place the dough in a bowl and cover with a tea towel. Set it aside in a warm spot for at least 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size. You can also rest the dough in the fridge overnight (store it in an airtight container).

  3. Step 3

To prepare the filling, add all ingredients to a small bowl and mix. Set aside in the fridge to thicken.

  4. Step 4

Grease a 30 x 15 cm baking pan or similar-sized pan with vegan butter or oil.

  5. Step 5

On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle about 30 x 45 cm large. Spread the cinnamon filling on the dough, close to the edge.

  6. Step 6

Starting from the long side, roll the dough into a tight log. Use a sharp knife to cut 12 scrolls from the log.

  7. Step 7

Arrange the scrolls in your baking pan. Cover them with a tea towel and set it aside in a warm spot for at least 1 hour. They’re ready to bake when they’re puffy again.

  8. Step 8

Preheat your oven to 180°C (convection) or 160°C (fan-forced).

  9. Step 9

Bake the cinnamon scrolls for around 25 minutes or until the filling is bubbling and the scrolls are golden brown.

  10. Step 10

While the scrolls are baking, make the cream cheese icing. Add all ingredients to a bowl and use a hand mixer to beat until combined. For a thicker frosting, add more butter.

  11. Step 11

Allow the scrolls to completely cool and spread over the icing.

Variation

If you don’t have cream cheese, you can make a soft vanilla buttercream from ½ cup vegan butter, 1-2 cups icing sugar, 1 tablespoon dairy-free milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Hot tip!

These cinnamon scrolls are best eaten the day they are baked. If you have leftovers, it’s recommended to warm them a little before eating.
